A sandwich box is a folding carton or clamshell sized to a specific cut — a half sandwich, a standard deli sandwich, a footlong, or a triangular wedge. The box holds the sandwich upright and stops it from shifting, which matters because a cut sandwich is structurally weak along the cut face and slides apart easily once it is moving.

Most sandwich boxes are cut and scored from a single piece of board, fold into a base with a hinged lid, and self-lock closed. That construction assembles fast during a lunch rush and stores flat when empty, which is why it dominates deli and grab-and-go service.

The wedge box deserves its own note, because it is shaped specifically for a triangular cut. A wedge box presents the cut face — the cross-section showing the fillings — toward the customer when the lid opens. That is the most appetizing angle on a sandwich, and it is why wedge packaging is used in display cases where the product has to sell itself.
