How Jar Selection Works
A jar project has a different order of decisions from a bottle, because the closure does more work. Shape and capacity come first — capacity has to match your fill volume plus the headspace your product needs, and fill volume for a preserve or a candle wax is measured differently. A 16 oz jar that is right for preserves is often too deep for a candle, where the wax only fills part of the vessel and the visible fill line is part of the product.
The closure and sealing system follow, and for food products this is the decision that carries real risk. A two-piece mason lid, a screw cap, and a lug cap each seal differently, and whether a jar holds a vacuum through a hot-fill or water-bath process depends on the exact closure and liner combination.
