A burger box is a folding carton built around a specific problem: a stacked, wet, warm, structurally fragile product that has to arrive looking like it did when it left the kitchen. The box holds the burger upright, keeps the bun from compressing, and gives the whole build a defined footprint so it travels predictably in a delivery bag.

The clamshell is the most common construction. It is cut and scored as one piece, folds into a base and a hinged lid, and self-locks closed: which makes it fast to assemble during a rush and cheap to store flat. Separate-lid boxes and folding cartons are also used, particularly where a taller build or a specific opening experience matters.

The lid is the branding surface. When a customer opens the box, the inside of the lid and the top panel are both visible within seconds. That is a very short window, so the artwork that works best is bold and legible rather than detailed and subtle.

Board & Construction

The board choice balances print quality against strength. Smoother board holds finer print detail; heavier board holds its shape better under a loaded burger and a stack of other boxes.

Why Burger Concepts Print Their Boxes

Burger restaurants live on repeat orders and delivery volume, and the box is the one branded surface that reaches the customer every time. It also does something a bag cannot: it holds the product still. A burger that slides around in a generic container arrives looking assembled by accident, no matter how well it was made.

Printed boxes also create a consistent presentation across a menu. When a burger, a side, and a drink all arrive in coordinated packaging, a small operation reads as a deliberate brand rather than a kitchen with a delivery app.

On the Line and in the Bag

A burger box is designed around one specific failure: the build collapses on the ride. A stacked burger is soft at the bottom, heavy in the middle and slippery on top, and every part of the box exists to stop that stack from moving before the lid opens. The footprint has to be close enough to the build that the burger cannot slide, and tall enough that the lid does not press the top bun down.

That is why sizing is done against the finished build rather than the patty. A double with a tall bun, a thick patty and a stack of toppings can be close to twice the height of a single, and a box specced on the patty size will close on the crown and flatten it. Measure the tallest item you actually serve, not the average.

Moisture is the other thing the box has to survive. A hot burger releases steam, and a closed clamshell holds it. That is what softens a bun on a long delivery run and what turns a crisp fried element into something limp. The page's construction notes cover where venting or a looser closure helps, and it is worth telling us if the build includes a fried component that has to stay crisp.

In the bag, burger boxes are usually stacked. A clamshell with a self-locking tab holds its own lid down, but a stack of three or four boxes in a delivery bag still presses on the bottom one, and a single-wall board will flex under that weight where a heavier board or corrugated will not. Where the kitchen runs tall stacks and heavy builds, the board grade and the closure need to be specified together rather than chosen separately.

At the customer's end, the lid is the whole reveal. Opening the box is a two-second moment, and everything printed on the inside of the lid and the top panel is seen within it. That is why bold marks and larger type hold up on a burger box where fine linework does not, and it is also why the inside-of-lid placement exists at all: it puts the message exactly where the customer looks when the box opens, rather than on a panel they have already seen in the bag.

One planning point worth settling before the artwork is finalised. A burger program usually runs two or three footprints across one shared mark, from a slider pack to a double-stack box, so the layout has to read on the smallest lid and the tallest side panel at once. Confirming the mark across the full size range in mockup review is what stops a design that looks right on the hero box from failing on the slider pack.

Burger boxes are custom manufactured after you approve the design and pricing. They are not pulled from stock. The sequence is: configure your specifications, receive a free digital mockup, approve the design and pricing, manufacturing begins, then the completed order is delivered nationwide.
