Four measurements settle it. The length is the one most buyers start with, and on a long-format bag it is the figure that decides whether the loaf goes in without being forced. The width matters more than it looks: a boule is as wide as it is long, and a bag narrow enough for a batard will not take one. The depth, or gusset, is what lets a round loaf sit without the bag pressing into the crust on both sides, and it is the measurement most often left out of an enquiry. The height sets how much of the loaf stays visible above the top edge, which is a display decision as much as a capacity one.

There is a practical test that beats measuring. Put a loaf on the counter and draw the footprint and height you need around it, then send us those three numbers. It takes a minute and it removes the guesswork entirely, which matters because a bag that fits badly does not just look wrong: it presses on the crust, and the crust is the product.

An open top presents the loaf and lets it breathe. For bread being eaten the same day, that is usually the right answer: nothing is trapped against the crust and the loaf keeps the character it had when it came out of the oven. A fold-over top holds the loaf without a tie and is the middle ground, covering the bread while leaving it able to move air. A tin tie makes the bag reclosable, which suits a customer who takes a loaf home and works through it over several days, though a bag closed tight against a warm loaf will soften the crust faster than one left open.

A band or sleeve around the middle is the third route and reads as the most craft-forward of the three. It leaves the crust completely exposed, which is excellent for presentation and for a loaf being carried a short distance on the same day, and less useful for a loaf that has to survive a longer journey.

The honest position is that none of these is universally better. The closure follows from how your bread is sold: eaten today, carried home for the week, or photographed in a display case before it is bought.
