About Single-Wall Hot Cups
Single-wall hot cups are the format most coffee is served in worldwide. One layer of paper board, rolled and seamed, sealed at the base. The interior is coated so the liquid does not soak through; the exterior stays a printable paper surface.
The reason this format remains the default for high-volume operations is cost per unit. A single-wall cup uses less paper, weighs less in shipping, and stacks flatter than an insulated alternative, so the same pallet and the same delivery handles more drinks. That economy is the reason a sleeve (also a printed, paper-based item) is added at service rather than built into the cup. The cost stays low and the cup does the single job it is designed for: hold a hot drink long enough to hand it over.
The trade-off is comfort. With one layer of paper the outside warms up quickly, and a customer holding a freshly poured cup reaches for a sleeve or a second napkin. That makes the sleeve the part of the drink the customer actually touches, which is also the part they look at. Hot cup size is usually decided by the menu rather than the drink. A shop selling one size of brewed coffee and a shop selling espresso, cortado, flat white, and a large filter coffee to the same customers are not buying the same set of cups, even if both have the words 'coffee' on the board.
